Chapter 9

The trio drove west until they reached Fort Wayne, Indiana, four hours after leaving Cleveland. Accounts of Franklin’s death, and how it had happened, were on all the news stations. The original assessment, at least from the reports the police had released, blamed what had occurred on an exploding gas tank. The men knew that would soon change, and doubted the police believed the story they gave out to begin with.

“They don’t want the general population to panic, thinking it was some sort of terrorist attack,” Gage said, getting nods of agreement from his companions.

“I say we get something to eat, then decide what’s next,” Ash suggested as they reached the outskirts of Fort Wayne.

“Good idea. Before we do, let’s find a shipping store. I have to send the MGL back to my friend.” Kegan had cleaned it, wiping it clear of any fingerprints, as he handled it the previous evening without wearing gloves. He wasn’t worried about the grenade shells the police might find at the scene. He hadn’t loaded the launcher until they were on the boat, when he’d been wearing gloves.

They located a store, Kegan took the box in, already sealed and addressed. He asked for Same Day delivery, paying a sizable amount for that. The credit card he used—the same one he’d been using since they’d left Ash’s island, other than to pay for the launcher—would be disposed of as soon as he got back to the van, along with its accompanying ID.

“Food, now?” Gage asked, looking longingly at a restaurant across from where they’d parked. “In case you forgot, we didn’t eat breakfast.”

Ash and Kegan laughed. They did eat, then took off, continuing west across the country to Kansas City.

“Are we going to hit Hardy at his home?” Ash asked at one point. “That’s usually easier, with less chance of collateral damage.” He snickered. “Unless we go for grenade launchers again. Then we could wipe out the whole neighborhood.”

Kegan laughed. “Not even close and you know it. We’d need a bomb and that’s not happening. Anyway, to answer your question, we’ll go after Hardy where he works. We didn’t do that with Morse or Franklin, which might make Hardy think we avoided hitting them at their headquarters because of the kind of security they had there. Not that he’ll drop his guard during the day, but if he’s expecting us to go after him at home, that’s where he’ll be concentrating his attention. That’s my thought, at least. If either of you disagree…” He looked between them.

“Makes sense to me,” Gage said. “If we’re right, which is fifty-fifty, Patterson will be in town. He’ll want to oversee keeping Hardy safe, while he uses him as bait to capture us.”

“Try to capture us,” Ash said bluntly.

“Right. Anyway, we’ll check out both places for starters. Not obviously of course, but—” Gage rapped a finger on the dashboard,”—if we just happened to make a minor mistake to let Hardy think we’re planning to target him at home…”

Kegan nodded slowly.
