Chapter 9
The trio drove west until they reached Fort Wayne, Indiana, four hours after leaving Cleveland. Accounts of Franklinâs death, and how it had happened, were on all the news stations. The original assessment, at least from the reports the police had released, blamed what had occurred on an exploding gas tank. The men knew that would soon change, and doubted the police believed the story they gave out to begin with.
âThey donât want the general population to panic, thinking it was some sort of terrorist attack,â Gage said, getting nods of agreement from his companions.
âI say we get something to eat, then decide whatâs next,â Ash suggested as they reached the outskirts of Fort Wayne.
âGood idea. Before we do, letâs find a shipping store. I have to send the MGL back to my friend.â Kegan had cleaned it, wiping it clear of any fingerprints, as he handled it the previous evening without wearing gloves. He wasnât worried about the grenade shells the police might find at the scene. He hadnât loaded the launcher until they were on the boat, when heâd been wearing gloves.
They located a store, Kegan took the box in, already sealed and addressed. He asked for Same Day delivery, paying a sizable amount for that. The credit card he usedâthe same one heâd been using since theyâd left Ashâs island, other than to pay for the launcherâwould be disposed of as soon as he got back to the van, along with its accompanying ID.
âFood, now?â Gage asked, looking longingly at a restaurant across from where theyâd parked. âIn case you forgot, we didnât eat breakfast.â
Ash and Kegan laughed. They did eat, then took off, continuing west across the country to Kansas City.
âAre we going to hit Hardy at his home?â Ash asked at one point. âThatâs usually easier, with less chance of collateral damage.â He snickered. âUnless we go for grenade launchers again. Then we could wipe out the whole neighborhood.â
Kegan laughed. âNot even close and you know it. Weâd need a bomb and thatâs not happening. Anyway, to answer your question, weâll go after Hardy where he works. We didnât do that with Morse or Franklin, which might make Hardy think we avoided hitting them at their headquarters because of the kind of security they had there. Not that heâll drop his guard during the day, but if heâs expecting us to go after him at home, thatâs where heâll be concentrating his attention. Thatâs my thought, at least. If either of you disagreeâ¦â He looked between them.
âMakes sense to me,â Gage said. âIf weâre right, which is fifty-fifty, Patterson will be in town. Heâll want to oversee keeping Hardy safe, while he uses him as bait to capture us.â
âTry to capture us,â Ash said bluntly.
âRight. Anyway, weâll check out both places for starters. Not obviously of course, butââ Gage rapped a finger on the dashboard,ââif we just happened to make a minor mistake to let Hardy think weâre planning to target him at homeâ¦â
Kegan nodded slowly.
